Quick Heating Tips for Fall
The leaves are changing in southern Ontario, so it’s a great time to institute some energy-saving measures for your home.
Schedule an annual service for you furnace or heat pump. A checkup will pinpoint operational problems that may lead to wasted energy. Plus, it will give you peace of mind that you less likely to get caught off guard by an unexpected breakdown this winter.
Change your furnace or heat pump filter. A filter keeps dirt and other particles out of your equipment so that it runs more efficiently.
Air seal your home. Examine the exterior of your home this fall and look for any cracks/gaps around windows and doors. Fill with caulking, or replace weatherstripping and insulation.
Turn down your thermostat down a few degrees to save energy, or install a programmable smart thermostat better regulate engery use while you’re sleeping or away.
Leave blinds and window coverings open during daylight hours, let the sun’s energy add warmth to your home.
Run overhead ceiling fans clockwise in the winter will push heat down from the ceiling, reducing lost heat.
If you have a gas fireplace that has been turned off all summer, pick a moderately warm day to turn it on for the first time this fall. Likely there will be a lot of settled dust that can produce an unpleasant (but temporary) odor, so have a few windows open in the house to vent it out.
